Su Bodnar

Su is a freelance portrait and mural artist and works under the name Studio Mayer. She has painted residential and commercial murals up and down the country and has been drawing, painting and selling portraits since she was 14 years old. She has a degree in the History of Art, Design and Film, and over 18 years' tutoring experience.

After university, Su trained and worked for a while in the film industry for directors including Michael Winterbottom and Tim Burton. This background gave her an in-depth knowledge of composition, colour and light, which still influences her current practice and tutoring.

Su has also recently trained in the sight-size method at the Sarum Studio Atelier of Fine Art. As a result, Su will be introducing cast drawing as an option in her classes.

Portrait classes

Wednesday 6.45pm - 8.45pm

Cost: £105 per 6 week block. Block booking only. Gift Vouchers available.

Just like the regular Paint and Draw classes but with a focus on people as subject matter. If portraiture, or representing people in any 2-D media is your thing, these classes would be more suitable. Julie Turnbull

Julie Turnbull

My creative background is in textiles, woodcarving, glassblowing and furniture design. My later creative career continued at Sheffield Hallam University following undergraduate and masters’ study. As a design researcher, my work involved developing and making artefacts for national and international exhibitions, also teaching for several years at undergraduate and postgraduate level across art and design disciplines.

More recently, I have worked extensively with community groups, including developing a sensory drawing activity with audio-description for Walkley Festival, and working alongside people with brain injuries at Meersbrook Walled Garden. My purpose is always to enable people to explore and develop their own creativity.

Art Classes

Monday 10am - 12pm

Thursday 10am - 12pm

Cost: £95 per 6 week block (payable at start of block). Please note, some blocks run for fewer weeks, priced accordingly.

Drop-in rate £17 per session (pre-booking recommended).

Classes are designed to allow participants to bring along their own ideas and curiosity; my role is to support the creative process, advising on aspects such as composition, use of colour, and learning to look from other perspectives.

In bringing a broad range of media and techniques into people’s work, I hope to invite a sense of adventure and play into the mix. My aim is to heighten the experience for others making art by questioning how we see and respond to a subject, rather than by simply looking and representing it.

Lena Papapanagiotou

Lena Papapanagiotou

Born and educated in Athens, Greece, I studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1988 with a BA in Painting. I was then awarded funding from the National Grant Foundation to continue with postgraduate studies in printmaking for three years based in my studio in Athens. My first solo exhibition was in Ora Gallery in Athens in 1990 and since then I have had several solo and group exhibitions in Athens, Crete, London, Cambridge and Sheffield.

On moving to Sheffield, I continued painting, and broadened my creative output, studying both cabinet making and interior design at Sheffield College. I have taken part in the annual Open Up studio event in Sheffield since 1999. In 2004 I started the 'Say it with Colour' and 'Teen Art' classes at Hangingwater Studio, which ran successfully for 18 years, and also tutored group painting holidays in Greece. In 2010 I took over the management of Hangingwater Studio and since then have been committed to its role as a friendly, lively and safe creative environment.

Ariana Martin

Ariana Martin

Ariana Martin is a pattern designer and maker, whose studio is based at Hangingwater Studio.

She creates joyful patterns, inspired by 20th Century design, and prints these patterns onto stationery and homewares, for sale in shops around the UK and from her website. Since graduating from BA Interdisciplinary Textile Design, she went on to complete an MA History of Design and to research interwar textiles. This is where she fell in love with 20th Century pattern and textiles - her own aesthetic sensibility is galvanised by the work of these bygone designers.

Ariana is currently developing her screen-printing practice and has been supported by the Sheffield Freelance Arts + Culture Workers Fund in doing so.

Nether Green Art Group

This friendly group meets during school term time on Tuesday mornings, 10am - 12.30pm. We paint mostly in watercolour, but also branch out into mixed media when the mood takes us.

Local artists come as tutors for a few sessions to teach us new ideas, skills and approaches to the whole process of creating interesting pictures from a range of different subjects, either from photos or from life. Currently, we are alternating tutored sessions with practice sessions in order to try out a new approach and have something to discuss with the tutor the following week.

If you are interested in the group, do drop in and see us. We currently have no vacancies but we can add your details to the waiting list.
